The Orange Could Be Golden This Year
By: Euan McCreath
July 25th , 2023
Charlotte, NC - To say that the Syracuse Orangemen had an up and down 2022
campaign would be a vast understatement. Not many teams go through both a six-
game winning streak and endure a five-game losing streak in one season. The
Orangemen, who were 7-6 last year, were plagued by injuries along the way and
despite losing arguably their best player in the last decade in running back Sean Tucker,
this year brings a renewed optimism to upstate New York. Tucker, now a Tampa Bay
Buccaneer, was an absolute stud in the backfield and was a threat to take it the
distance anytime he touched the ball and also helped in the play action facet of the
offense.
HerbFm’s Chris Heidel caught up with head coach Dino Babers at ACC Media Day in
Charlotte and asked him about how the running game could improve even with the loss
of Tucker to the NFL? “We need to get those guys solidified up front. As the big guys
go, we go, whether that’s the O-line or D-line. If we can get that solidified, then we’ve
got a host of characters that are looking forward to seeing if they can step into the
shoes that Mr. Tucker left.” Adding to that challenge is the fact that the Orange lost three
starters from their offensive line.
The first man up in attempting to fill the shoes of
Tucker is LeQuint Allen. The 6’0, 180-pound sophomore is a dual threat running back
who displayed soft hands and toughness last season while averaging over six yards per
carry. He ended his true freshman season tallying 154 all-purpose yards in the Pinstripe
Bowl against Minnesota.
Garrett Shrader returns under center for his senior year as the Syracuse signal caller.
Shrader is the quintessential dual threat quarterback and is a threat to tuck it and run at
any time. Shrader threw for 17TDs while amassing 453 rushing yards and scoring nine
rushing touchdowns. Shrader shared these thoughts about what Cuse fans can expect
this season, “I feel like we have a clear-cut identity this year. It will look a little bit
different, and I think we’ll be a lot more explosive.” When he does throw, he will
undoubtedly be looking for his playmaking tight end/wide receiver Oronde Gadsen II.
The sophomore had a breakout season in 2022 catching 61 passes for 969 yards and
six touchdowns.
The 6’5, 215-pound receiver can do it all. He also had 25 more
receptions than anyone else on the team. Coach Babers was asked about Gadsen
attending Media Day as a sophomore when he offered these thoughts, “Oronde is
different. He is older than his years. He was well tutored before he got to us from his
dad who played for the Dolphins and he is very mature about his work.” Gadsen is
explosive and will be the focal point of the passing game this year.
With six returning starters on defense, the Orangemen are looking to make some noise
on that side of the ball. The Cuse yielded a stingy 23.1 points per game, good for 40 th in
the country. The defense also did a good job getting to the quarterback tallying 33 sacks
on the season, tied for 38 th in the country. Syracuse had the third best defense in the
ACC last season as they welcome. back their leading tackler and sack producer in
linebacker Marlowe Wax. How much better could the defense be with new Defensive
Coordinator Rocky Long who is often thought of as an innovator of the 3-3-5 defense?
Long was very successful during his time at New Mexico and hopes to bring that
success cross country to a fan base hungry for success.
Now entering his eighth season as the head coach at Syracuse, Dino Babers could. potentially lead his. team back to make some serious noise in the ACC and could even
have the Cuse back in the national spotlight. The big question is how the new pieces on
that offensive line will gel and what will be the improvement in quarterback Garrett
Shrader under new offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
